Geek-Informed EMDR Consultation

A client keeps returning to a game, character or fandom. You can see that it matters, but you may be wondering how it connects with the EMDR work.

I’m a Certified Geek Therapist and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant in Training™ (CIT). We can look at those interests as part of your client’s language, identity and resources while keeping the clinical purpose clear.

The Client’s Interests Belong in the Conversation

A character may help a client describe strength or vulnerability. A gaming community may be important to their experience of belonging. The client determines what is meaningful; our task is to stay curious about their experience.

We can examine how the client’s own language, imagery and communities relate to rapport, preparation, resourcing and case conceptualization. Proposed adaptations stay within the EMDR framework and your scope of competence.

What We Can Think Through

Rapport and Understanding

Consider how to ask about a fandom or character without relying on assumptions. Communication and sensory preferences deserve the same individual attention.

Preparation and Resourcing

Explore whether the client’s own imagery could support preparation or resourcing, and what you learn from their response.

Case Conceptualization

Think through why you want to use a metaphor or creative resource, how it connects to the treatment plan, and whether it serves a clear clinical purpose.

Questions You May Have

Do I need to be a gamer or know the fandom?

No. We can discuss how to invite the client’s expertise and understand what the interest means to them while keeping your clinical purpose clear.

Is this a separate EMDR protocol?

This focus attends to a client’s interests and context. It is not a separate EMDR protocol or a substitute for EMDR training.

What background informs this work?

I’m a Certified Geek Therapist through Geek Therapeutics, with Therapeutic Game Master training and experience designing and facilitating therapeutic gaming groups.

I’ve guest lectured in graduate counseling courses on therapeutic roleplay gaming with adults and groups. My doctoral research explored queer joy among trans women and trans femme geeks, informing my attention to clients’ experiences of identity, connection and belonging.

More about my background

What should I bring to consultation?

Bring a focused question and relevant de-identified case material, including what the client has shared about the interest and what you’re hoping to understand. We’ll agree on any recordings, necessary consent and secure handling before using them.
